is it possible to run a webserver off of an old socket 7 board with just command line linux running apache? im going to try and put redhat 9 on a 1 gig hd and run an apache server. it will be using the older network cards so it wont run too fast, but it will run hopefully. any suggestions, comments, dissagrements? i will continue this.

Sure. I have my domains running on a Socket7 200mhz Pentium right now for a temp solution (process of moving next month, all computers in storage til then) and I've got Apache running, NFS, Samba, FTP and I did have mysql running but its doing fine really.. I've used this piece of crap machine for all kinds of uses. One of the hard drives has some bad sectors but yet, Its been running for past year and a half on and off as a spare temp server for me with no issues at all... ;)

I'm running Slackware on it as well and I've even have updated just about everything to Slackware-Current with no problems as well.. No gui though on it as its not needed.

:D I used a plain Pentium computer (< 200 mhz) for a webserver. Very, very, very slow machine. I can't emphasize how slow it was. However, it served pages very fast! I was surprised.

Yes, Linux is great for running complete servers with scripting, databases, mail, and more, all with only a command-line. All administration is quite easy, too. In fact, there are a few organizations that specialize in creating a text-only webserver distro. Pretty cool!

Most poeple don't realize that serving up simple web pages isn't much. If you don't have constant poeple browsing your site and have a fairly fast connection.. trasferring those 10k to 50k size pages on average isn't anything too demanding from a server...
