is it necessary to log out

I am running a job on a Linux stand alone machine, which takes about 2 weeks to complete. I haven't logged out of my user account for about a week. I am planning to start another job which might take an additional 2 weeks. I was wondering if it is necessary to log out of my user account to refresh the system? Will the system performace be affected if I stay logged in for a long time? I appreiciate your help in advance.

Regards,
Sameer

Linux was originally a server system, so logging out is not necessary. Ditto with turning off - we have people on this site who haven't rebooted fro more than a year. As long as your box is secure you should be fine.

screen is your friend when having to run applications that might take hours, days, weeks. You can password protect it as well. But honestly, if you are not at the machine physically, it's good to logout (screen allows you process to continue running) for security purposes but performance won't be impacted. I leave screen sessions open for weeks or months without issues all the time.
