Is Exim4 the right software for this?
 

I have just bought a mobile broadband dongle for my laptop. As the service does not come with an email account, I would like to use my home broadband ISP's SMTP server to send emails. My linux box at home (running debian) has a fixed IP address, and so I just need to configure an MTA (I think?) to accept emails coming via the internet from my laptop and forward to my ISP's SMTP email server for delivery. I am used to command-line linux, but I know very little about the email side of things. Obviously I have a lot of reading to do, but I just wanted to ask which software would be able to do the above? There's not much point in me spending hours RingTFM of the wrong software! Is exim4 the answer?

well you could do that, but that is going to be overkill. I've never understood why anyone thinks there should be any connection between your ISP and your email provider... Who cares that it doesn't come with an account? Anyway, your home isp will publish their mail server settings which you can probably use globally, not just from one of their own connections, although that might be the case. In general though there is no answer because there is (probably) no problem to fix. you can send emails as whoever you want, just send them to a suitable smtp server, possibly one running on your own machine even - although that can lead to some issues form other ISP's coming from a 3g / grps based IP.
