Is emerald obselete?

I was just wondering, with the merge between compiz and compiz fusion, is the emerald window decorator obselete? are there any dangers to using it?

I'm just considering switching to it, I've been trying to get transparent title bars with the gtk decorator and metacity, and have had no luck.

Emerald is part of Compiz-Fusion, not a separate entity. Compiz manages the actual placement and movement of the windows, and Emerald handles the window decorations. Emerald doesn't replace Compiz, in fact I am fairly sure Emerald can't even function without Compiz running.

That said, you should be able to do transparent title bars with just gtk-window-decorator; I am looking at them right now. But Emerald does give you much more control over themes and such.

How is it possible in metacity? Is there a way to edit an existing theme (i.e. Ubuntu Dust) to give transparent title bars? I'm not overly familiar with the metacit xml theme format

You need to use gconf-editor and edit the following files:

/apps/gwd/metacity_theme_opacity
/apps/gwd/metacity_theme_active_opacity

Give them a value of 0 for transparent or 1 for translucent.
