Is cp of /usr/X11R6 causing problem?

I have Redhat 8.0 installed and wanted to install the XFree86-Xvfb-4.2.0-72.i386.rpm. In the beginning of the install, it asks (or recommends) you to make a copy of /usr/X11R6. So, I quit out of the install...to make a bkup of X11R6. Instead of copying the directory to tape/cdrom/floppy, I attempted to make a bkup on the actual disk, by using the cp command. All of a sudden, error messages were popping up telling me a fatal error has occured and Gnome is going down. After that (Friday 2nd), I haven't seen Gnome...or any gui for that matter. I am working on the command line. When I have rebooted the server messages such as the following appear:
/sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_host adapter, errno=0 Loading cpqarray module
failed
&
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/usb/usb-uhci.0 failed

Also, when I am logged on the following message appears on occasion:
INIT=id 'X' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.

Wondering if anyone can provide some insight?

Did attempting to cp the /usr/X11R6 to /usr/X11R6.bkup cause this problem???

what's in /var/log/XFree86.0.log ?
using "less" or "vi" search for EE or WW which are the markers for errors and warnings.

I viewed the file but can't make sense of it. Here are the warnings:

(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)
(WW) ATI(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xbd000000,0x200000)
(WW) ATI(0): Cannot shadow an accelerated frame buffer.
(WW) ATI(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xbd000000,0x200000)
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)
(WW) ATI(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xbd000000,0x200000)

Can you help??
