Arch is a "rolling release distro." If you are very concerned about "updates crippling your computer" then use a very stable distro such as: Debian, CentOS, Scientific Linux, or Mint LTS.

I wouldn't consider it a hassle, it passes a few evenings and you learn a lot. It's rather quite enjoyable. I use Mint on my main computer because it does the job and I need reliability. I use Arch on a little minimalistic recovery system I installed on a 4GB USB. I also use it on my home-server, pretty much because it's fun.

I've used Arch back in the day when it was using the older init system. I did have to relearned the new systemd and Arch's new method of installation last year. Still, I manage to get it installed and working on the first try. If it wasn't for Arch's excellent wiki instructions, it may have been difficult to configure. In my opinion, Arch is not that difficult really, it just appears to be.
