Is an Antivirus necessary?

Should I install an antivirus while using LM? And if I should, what is the best antivirus for LM?

The quick explanation is 'no' you do not need anti-virus on linux. Unless you touch a lot of windows files, and work with a windows workgroup, where you trade those files back and forth, you would not need an antivirus which is primarily for windows infections. Additionally there are few viruses in the wild for linux.

There are quite a few discussions about this topic. You can find them by using the built-in search, or by using google, for more information.

For home users and individual workstation use? No. Linux has too few viruses to be concerned about it.

The only reasons you would need antivirus is if your Linux box is a file traffic hub for a primarily Windows environment or if you're paranoid.

I hope you aren't suggesting that a linux forwarding firewall uses an antivirus to inspect traffic...

No, I'm suggesting Linux is often used for routing and managing email for many an infrastructure. I'd suggest a Linux forwarding firewall uses iptables to inspect traffic (Not the contents of a packet, mind.).

Depending on your basic knowledge of Linux there's really only two ways to address this:
0) it's a question about Linux and viruses or
1) you really meant to ask "What do I need to do to keep my Linux installation safe?".

If it's the first then that's addressed by the replies given, if it's the latter then start reading your distributions basic user documentation (and maybe "rute user's tutorial and exposition") and its admin / security documentation after which you'll be able to ask more specific questions. Because while viruses do not affect Linux but that doesn't mean you don't have to be aware of things and it also doesn't mean you don't have the responsibility to actively keep things secure.
