Irregular behavior of KNetworkManager (0.1) under OpenSUSE 10.2
 

Mine is a Windows XP/OpenSUSE (10.2) dual-boot system.

While booting to OpenSUSE, KNetworkManager does not easily "grab"
the free wireless available networks.

In the "configuring stage", often stalls at the 28% level.

It runs a ndiswrapper for an USB by Linksys, originally developed
for use in the Windows XP world, found in SourceForge,
version 1.55; latest, as of 12/30/2009; wrapper for rt2870.

How do I upgrade KNetworkManager, ONLY ??
How do I install a linux driver for the rt2870 ??

I have:

KNetworkManager, version 0.1
KDE 3.5.5 "release 45"

There are apparently no repositories for any openSUSE distribution earlier than openSUSE 11.0. Norvell only maintains them for the current and the two previous versions. This causes problems when having to upgrade a package or dependencies.

You might try an RPM search for the particular packages you need here, but there is no guarantee of finding what you need for a solution.

Would openSUSE 11.2 as a fresh installation be an acceptable alternative solution?

80GB Hard disk.
256 MBytes RAM.
Processor (CPU): Celeron (Mendocino)
Speed: 465.63 MHz

Is there a distro favorite of yours ?

Indeed, jumping to OpenSUSE 11.2 would be ideal. For that I need
to make my current OpenSUSE (10.2) to be able to see an external
USB DVD(ROM) drive, first.

UNLESS, 11.2 can be found in CD form.
It is only published in DVD format, (as far as I know).

Doable ? yes.

Trivial ? not quite.

Obstacles are:

A 80 GB hard disk (about 75% for linux)
Processor (CPU): Celeron (Mendocino)
Speed: 465.63 MHz

If you think well of SUSE...

You should be able to use the installation DVD of openSUSE 11.2 to install 11.2 with the Xfce or the LXDE desktop. A full KDE or Gnome desktop starting with a live-cd installation may not be practicable, although you might be able to do a net installation.

You might also be able to use a newer linux live-cd for any procedures that your present installation will not accomplish.

You could start with that as an installed system and modify it as you need.

Of course what you need is to open your system,look at the memory slots and the size of the memory sticks, and try to scrounge more memory.

Trying to upgrade across so many versions numbers is not recommended. You would need a fresh installation.

Go in for a suitable Vector Linux or Xubuntu.

But Vector will be better. If you can put in a pci graphics card, the performance will be even better.

Creativity in a thigh system like my small laptop is, well, a must.

It took over three days to download five images using Firefox 2,
from Windows XP; wireless'speed: about 54Mbps.

CD RW burning took about three hours.

Furthermore, full installation of OpenSuSE (10.2) (for software development) had to be done in over 10 hours.

Those perfomance advantages make Vector Linux (or Xubuntu)
quite worth pondering, should another distro be contemplated
for my needs.

Again, the replies to my post regarding knetworkmanager,
by EVERYBODY, have been a learning experience in itself !!
