IR Shield with Raspberry Pi setup

Instructions from LinkSprite to setup IR Shield on Raspberry Pi per the following:

1 $sudo /etc/init.d/lirc stop

2 Run $mode2 -d /dev/lirc0

When I run this command it tells me that that file does not exist.

I have created that file (LIRC software did not create it) but it tells me it is not the right kind of file.

Should LIRC have created this file. I have reinstalled LIRC....still not working. The shield is supposed to read IR signals that can be saved and resent to a device (camera)

My first post so I may not be giving enough info but here goes.

You have to have the hardware installed for that device to exist. It would be created by the kernel during boot, or when the device driver is installed.

You cannot "create" the file yourself.
