IP Masqurading
 

I have two linux machines at home. Both run SuSE 8.1 with KDE3.1 My machine has a external modem installed and working.

Networking between the two machines is up and running.

I would like to configure my machine (with modem) and the other machine to allow the other machine to use the internet via mine.

The "other machine" was assigned a IP Address of 198.26.59.2.
My machine IP = 198.28.59.1

Using Yast, the other machines default gateway was set to 198.26.59.1.

IP Forwarding has been enabled on my machine.
SuSE personal firewall running on my machine. Configured according to book instructions.

For some od reason, I can not get the other machine to get onto the internet.

Linux is new to me and I don't know where or what I have to look at to fix this problem any more.

Is there a way that one can test to see if the router (my machine) has been set up correctly.

Where can I find easy documentation on how to get this working.

What is all required to accomplish IP masqurading in SuSE 8.1.

Are there any applications to assis newbi users in this sort of task?

what do you mean with "get the other machine to get onto the internet" ?

We need to know if it is a problem with the network or with the resolving.

From the other machine, try:
ping 198.28.59.1
Is it OK?
Then, what kind of software are you using for the proxying ?
Use squid.
Then check you are resolving DNS OK:
Are you running named (Bind) within 198.28.59.1 ?

Network is up and running means that both machines can see each other just fine. This further confirmed by the fact that multiplayer games work and fish and lan protocols operate properly.

Squid is used as the proxy.

"get the other machine to get onto the Internet" = browse, mail...

I also found a comment that the firewall might need replacing as there has been problems with that in the past.

Just downloaded the new SuSEfirewall2, see if that does not shed new light on the matter.
