invalid compressed data error

Greetings to all of you. This is my first post, so please forgive my nervousness.

I have been sent a file: filename.dat.gz.

When I put gzip -d filename.dat.gz, I get the following error message:

invalid compressed data--format violated

I also tried this with gunzip. Am I doing something wrong and how do I fix it?

Thanks for all your help,
Wendy

Hi

Googling for deccompressing dat.gz files doesn't reveal much, but your attempt appears correct. You might try zcat, which is the same as gunzip -c, but if that doesn't work, it could be that the file was compressed incorrectly.

Sorry couldn't be more help.

Bob
