Introduction
 

Hello All, Just joined the forum a minute ago. I am relatively new to Linux, although I once before experimented with Ubuntu 8 I think it was. I am quite enthusiastic about coming back and hope I can soon make a Linux operating system my first choice

I have seen the excellent improvement in Openoffice (now libreoffice) and other applications that I though I ought to give it another go. It is so, that in the last few days I have installed, Linux Mint 13, Mate and Cinnamon, Ubuntu 12.4 and Qimo for my child. It all started by trying the live CD of Kannopix. So perhaps this time I will stay and stop depending on windows

In the very short time I have been experimenting I have experienced a few problems, some solved and some not. I have had to reinstall a couple of times to save time.

I am experimenting on a second and third computer (the third died last night after installing Mint Cinnamon) at the moment just in case something goes completely wrong. I guess I will have lots of questions soon, but for know I just want to know why Mint and Ubuntu wouldn’t recognise my wireless network/modem but Qimo does. I know this problem has a solution as I have searched and seen some people have the same problem. My interest is to know why Qimo being simpler as it is a system for kids, works fine (well Qimo has other problems though)

This really strikes a chord!!--I went thru multiple episodes of withdrawal before I decided that--at least for home use--there was no reason that I needed Windows. This was ~ 5 years ago. Now, Linux is so mature that the transition is much easier.

If you feel that you are about to become a "distro-hopper", a word of caution: Switching distros to solve a problem can cause big trouble---much better to fix the issue in whatever setting you found it.

Post the details (in a new thread) and let us help.

Regarding being a "distro -hopper".. it is the first time I see the term. I was aware of Ubuntu and therefore trying Ubuntu 12.4. More recently I have read Mint is the most popular distro at the time, so just wanted to compare. Why mate and Cinnamon?.. well I am not sure what people are talking about when they say this used "Gnome" or this doesn't. Quimo, is for my kid.i tried Doudou Linux but did not work in either of the tree computers,, did not even install.. showed some errors... which i think I wrote down... but again, Ubuntu gave me errors too.

My experience with "kannopix"/? was incidental. It was on a free CD on a PC magazine. Only live though, comes with Chromium, which I though must be the version of Chrome.
