interpretting error messages


when i am typing apt-get install <package name>
i am getting these error logs:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header

E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_i18n_Translation-en


E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened

..and since you don't tell us what the package name is, whether you're running this as root or not, or even tell us what version/distro of Linux, there's not alot we can tell you. You don't tell us what you ran before this, so we don't know if you had edited something manually, etc.

Assuming you're using Ubuntu, just putting the error message into Google pulls up:

i am running ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the name of the package is "picocome" also the same error i received while installing package usb-modeswitch-data. i am running the following command as root and did not ran anything before typing "apt-get install picocome"

Ok..so did you look at link you were given in the first reply, and try the solution(s) listed in it??
