Internet very slow on Red Hat Enterprise AS 4
 

I am using NETGEAR Wireless router which is acting as DHCP server as well. My other windows hosts on same network are running internet very good (cable modem) but the computer where Red Hat Linux Enterprise AS 4 is installed, is not running very fast.

What could be the reason of this slowness in internet on Red Hat Linux host?

Check you resolv.conf, if your router IP is listed as a name server above your primary, remove it, and try to access the network again. I experience identical symptoms on my FC4 system, and it's a problem with name resolution not happening correctly on the router end. I spoke with my provider, and they provide the same fix for windows users. The only problem I've had is finding a way to avoid that from being set each time without writing a wrapper that gets replaced on each update...

FC4 = Fedora Core 4, it's just another distribution of linux.

Your primary name server is whatever is assigned by your DHCP server on the Internet side of your router. If you see your router's IP address in /etc/resolv.conf, try removing the line with it listed. There are probably three lines, including your router, so, once you've removed your router, you'll be left with two lines, one that says "search ..." and another that says "nameserver x.x.x.x" then try surfing. I hope this clarified my previous post well enough, if not, just ask again.

If there is no particular reason for using DHCP go static instead. Then you can set your own nameservers and nothing is going to overwrite it.

I have got my internet speed back as well. Actually the Wireless router is DHCP client from ISP and DHCP Server for my internal network. Before I was giving my router IP address as DNS or was removing it when it was not giving me speed. I replaced Primary DNS and Secondary DNS by my ISP DNS servers, I got those DNS addresses from router status. So after giving DNS of my ISP, my Red Hat Linux Enterprise 4 is giving me same speed as windows 2003 server giving.
