Internet speed is like dial up compare to DOZE!
I've installed a dual boot setup with the fedora pack 2 and doze XP. The problem is although i really love linux and the KDE interface I am having some serious issues with internet speed. On linux with konqueror and mozilla my speed is like dial up compared with IE on doze and i have a cable modem. I know it shouldnt be this extreme of a performance hit but i'm stuck and i dont know what to do. I use my pc for browsing and office apps. I would really hate to have to settle with windows. Please help. I'm sure its a stupid setting somewhere that i have over looked. I am wondering if it has to do with an MTU setting i read about. Thanks.

This should help...
edit /etc/modprobe.conf and change alias net-pf-10 ipv6 to alias net-pf-10 ipv6 install ipv6 /bin/true or if you don't have that line in there to begin with, just add the two lines above and save. Now reboot, and you should see quite the difference... <edit>I'm remembering something about a security issue with ipv6, so instead insert ipv4 in the two instances of ipv6 in the code above. Good luck, let us know if it works... |
i'd love to hear if this works -
will it improve speeds even if there's really no noticable speed problem? (my net speed test returns the exact same speeds as i got under windows). i'm wondering because i know in windows, there were several registry tweaks you had to do to get optimum performance from a broadband connection, as by default windows is configured for dial-up speeds. is linux the same way? are there tweaks to optimize the connection for broadband? :) |
nope, this just fixes poor speed performance...and only if the problem was related to it.
Sorry... |
WOW! Jeffrey, what a great tip. I wonder why this isn't there by default.
This Linux noob had the same problem as the OP, but adding those two lines made it all better! Thanks a gazillion! Can you explain what this changed. I have no idea, but would like to know why it worked. |
Sorry, no idea what that is doing. I got it from this thread...
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=195465 Just glad it worked, I was going nuts prior to that fix... |
There are tweaks for LINUX but it has much, much more tweaks than Windows.
Go to http://www.psc.edu/networking/perf_tune.html You can use Opera. It connects to the server using multple connections. Mozilla can do the same. In Mozilla type about:config in the address bar. The IPv6 will only work if you have an IPv6 combatible router, modem, and ISP. |
