Internet shuts down suddenly

Hello,

I am Samantha, and I am sorry, but I am still new at Linux.

I use Kunbuntu on my computer and I like it, I just have a little problem with the internet, I hope some one can help me! :P

I wanted to install Adobe Flash Player so I could acces some internet sites, and so I did. But now, as soon as I logg in on these internet sites, Internet shuts down completely. I don't know if this install is the problem, or if I need to update then :S

One of these sites I need for school, so please, if anyone can help me, you would really save the day!

thank you for your time,

Samantha

What exactly do you mean by internet shutting down? Please, give as complete a description as possible.
If you run the

ifconfig -a

command, does it still show the correct IP address on your ethernet card? Does you browser just shut down?

What browser are you using? Is it Konquerer, the browser that comes with Kubuntu?

I would suggest that installing Firefox would be a good idea as it doesn't suffer half the compatibility problems of Konquerer.

Click on 'K', 'System' and then 'Adept manager - Manage packages' then do a search for Firefox. Adept will install the software for you and Firefox will automatically install missing plug-ins like Flash.

Hello,

can you open a terminal window and 'su -' to become root then post the results of:

Code:

ifconfig
ping www.google.com -c 3

both before and after this happens?

also how are you connected to the internet?

hello,

thanks for your replay. when I log on on some pages, then as soon as I click on 'logg in' or press 'enter' then the window just dissappears. I have to restart internet again.

I typed what you said in Shell, this is what I got:

Hello, thanks for your replay!

yes, I have Konquerer, but I also have a normal internet Icon, with the browser Firefox/Netscape.

I tried what you said, but I can't logg into the Adept manager. I assume it takes the same password I use as Root?! but then it just says that the conversation with SU didn't work. :S

does that give you more information?

thanks,

Samantha

then I typed ping www.google.com -c 3 :

It's not the internet that disappears, it's just the browser that probably segfaults. What browser do you use? Try a different one, konqueror, firefox or Opera. Also, it might be helpful if you start your browser from the command line and try to reproduce the conditions that lead to its crash. The terminal window will contain some error messages that might help to identify the problem.

hello,

thanks for your quick replay.

I have two browsers I think. I have a normal internet Icon, with the browser Firefox/Netscape. and I also have konquerer, right next to the system menu (left-under). with the konquerer I don't have the problem that it dissappears, but with konqueror I can't acces these sites either :S it is just with the normal internet browser that I have this problem.

and I wish to try to start my browser from the command line, but how do I do that?? (:S)

thanks again!

Samantha
