internet sharing with vmware win2k from linux host?

i have searched threads on this site, and looked at vmware help, but i cannot find how to setup internet connection sharing between a linux host, and a vm with win2k

i have a host only network setup that seems to be working fine, and shows a local area connection under network/dialup connections in the vm with win2k, but there is no "sharing" tab in the properties to try to setup internet connection sharing

and since the internet is connection sharing is setup through win when it is a win host, do i need to setup on linux somehow in my situation?

i am using redhat 8 / vmware 3.1 / win2k pro
thanks in advance

i believe you need to install the ICS module under your network properties (win2K)

or do the sharing via linux. search www.google.com/linux for "IP Masquerading HOWTO"

i looked at the ip masquerading howto, and it was just driving my crazy (newbie forum :P)

i looked at ics stuff for win2k, such as http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_2000
but that shows that you have to right click on the internet connection to setup sharing

i have a dial up connection on linux, and the local area connection on win2k that i want to access the dial up internet over the network cards

this is poopy :<

oh
this may be an issue
under network config on linux, eth0 is inactive
do i need to somehow set that up to connect to the vm win2k?

but why does the connection in win2k say it is fine, and is sending and recieving packets (i dunno what it would be secnding or receiving anyway :\)?

nevermind
got it to work

i was using host only, because that is what it sounded like i should use when reading the 3.2 docs with vmware 3.1 :P

in case someone searched for this thread:

what you want to do if you have linux host and win2k on vm for dialup is just connect on linux, make sure config for vmware is setup initially (/~/vmware-config.pl at startup) with NAT support, add nat to ethernet adapters in configuration for virtual machine
and in win2k network/dialup config, there should be the local area connection
go into properties, then into properties for tcp/ip, and change the ip and dhcp both to automatic
and it should work fine

at least for me :P

thanks for the help, born4linux
