How are you going online? Dail-up or Broadband
If BroadBand is there a cable/dsl router between computer and modem?
If so and it is using the default setup then you are pretty safe. But enabling firewall on the machine is one more layer of security.

I have a linux firewall router to a lan and dmz networks. lan has edition firewall router between it. Each machine runs a firewall with only the needed open ports. as well as the wireless link with wpa running with a firewall between it and the lan. Call me paranoid but I feel pretty secure.

I use the Project Files firewall on one computer (http://projectfiles.com/firewall/) and Firestarter on the other (http://www.fs-security.com/) I'm happy with both of them. Project files is simpler and strictly text configuration. Firestarter offers a GUI interface.
