Internet-related questions

Im having a few head-bashing sessions here trying to get things up and running, under RH 9.

First of all, I can't seem to send email at all (I can receive fine), I have the server set up and everything via smtp, and its a no go. Ive tried telnetting to it via "telnet smtp.snet.net 25", but thats a no go too.

Secondly, I have gtk-gnutella installed, but I cant seem to connect, it always times out.

An important note, Im on a school network, so that might be the problem, but I really don't want to use that as an excuse without thinking things through first.

Post your (error) output when you run your telnet command. I just tried from my computer and it worked here.

Since you are on a school network are you trying to go through a firewall?

Error is:

[root@localhost root]# telnet smtp.snet.net 25
Trying 204.60.203.69...
telnet: connect to address 204.60.203.69: Connection timed out

Also about the firewall, Im not sure if thats it, because people around here (that I know) use Hotmail and Yahoo and the sort. Also, they can connect via Kazaa under Windoze just fine . Because of that, Im led to think its just due to my inexperience.

It could still be a firewall issue. If they are using the web interface for Hotmail and Yahoo, they are using the HTTP protocol which most firewall admins allow.

Now Kazaa is a different story :)

Yep, I know that, and I would be more apt to place blame on a firewall if they couldn't do kazaa, either. Im just a bit
