internet problems (sporadically) and doom 3 install???

1. Every once in a while, my internet connection just ..... slows down. CS and other games play online fine, but web browsing doesn't. Second, i have doom 3 on cds and i have no linux installer. I have copied pak0-5 to the correct folder, but what else do I have to do, I also have the linux installer for the 1.3 patch.

I figured out the problem , had to set desktop to 24-bit color.

but a new problem , sound is all mechanical (like some techno song), which it shouldn't be i found this:

Alsa and multichannel sound

Starting with build 1286, DOOM III on Linux now supports both Alsa and OSS sound backends, as well as multichannel sound.

If you are having trouble with Alsa, here are a few things you can try:

*
instead of the default device, try using plughw:0, and surround51 for multichannel. A lot of Alsa installations have a misconfigured default device. You do that by passing +set s_alsa_pcm <alsa_device_name> on the command line.
*

if you are trying to get multichannel sound, make sure stereo works already. You switch between stereo and multichannel with +set s_numberOfSpeakers 2 and +set s_numberOfSpeakers 6
*

Then, if Alsa doesn't work, try using the OSS emulation ( +set s_driver oss ) .. and after that, just use plain OSS ( the OSS/Free implementation, or even better the OSS/Linux one from [WWW] OpenSound ). OSS is not an outdated and deprecated sound API. It turns out to be much easier to setup and operate than Alsa for a lot of people.

none of these commands work +set isnt a valid command, I have working alsa and oss, what could the problem be?

The +set is a command-line parameter for Doom 3. Should be run as "doom3 +set s_driver oss", this tells doom3 to use it's OSS compatible mode instead of ALSA. I had this same problem with the weird techno sound, that fixed it. You can also string more together, ie: "doom3 +set s_driver oss +disconnect", this starts the game with OSS mode, and skips the 'heartbeat' video.
NOTE: You can just use the "+set s_driver oss" parameter once, it writes to Doom3's .cfg file, and will remember it from then on in, meaning you can just use "doom3" to run the game fine after that
