internet on linux
when i first connect to the net on a newly installedl inux system, is there anything i should get hold of right away?
I know this is kind of a security question, but I'm just thinking standard virus protection/firewall stuff - do i need to be aware of it specifically? |
there is no such thing as a Virus Protection thing for linux, because the last linux virus was a fiew years ago. But run a firewall or be behind a router, because a good hacker can still get into a linux system.

that's cool, i'm behind a router, cheers for that! i'm getting more and more excited waiting for my pc to arrive so i can start abandoning microsoft for something that works!
oh one more thing - is there a pop up stopper for linux? or is that another thing linux doesn't havea problem with? |

re anti-virus/firewall, better focussing on a firewall - worth having look at guarddog or firestarter front-ends. http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/ http://www.simonzone.com/software/guarddog/ |
you can block popups with opera, firefox, and mozilla just with settings
also can allow specific sites popups you can also use the firefox and mozilla files in ~/.mozilla and .firefox called userContent.css to eliminate the display of adds by the browser speeding up internet considerably and generally fixing a broken www also can use proxy server privoxy to kill adds or squid to cache dns lookups |
wow now that's cool stuff, when's my computer getting here damnit I wanna play!
