Unhappy Internet on Debian after Kernel recompile

Hello, i'm new to linux so i figured newbie was the best place for this post

anyways, i installed Debian 3.0 because it was so simple to install ( http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2016 ), however upon installing it i found that when i shutdown -h now, the computer did not actually shut down, so i decided a kernel recompile was necessary. everything was fine after recompile, sound worked great, computer powered down when i asked it too, and all was great. until i tried the internet. i have re-compiled the kernel several times, and i can never get internet to work. i use telus adsl internet, dhcp and all that. i installed etherconf and ran that, but still no go. i have an onboard sis network card and a cheapo realtek clone deal ( i'd post an lsmod or whatever that is, but i am at work right now, not at home)

ecs k7s5a mobo (onboard sound and lan)
athlon 1.4
256 sdram
kernel 2.2.18

anyone have any ideas as to what i need to do to have internet work? if i need to post any more info, let me know and i'll get it on here.

Thanks alot!

To get the sis working all you need is normally the sis900 driver in the kernel.
Did you set CONFIG_FILTER=y and CONFIG_UNIX=y?
It's under Networking Options - Socket Filtering

I believe so... when i get home tonite i'll make sure of it.. those are default set to y i think

I should say that i can disable the sis lan in the bios, and only use the realtek card (i was using that before the recompile, not the sis card)
would that be best, as then i would only have one ether device, or should i attempt to have sis work?

I don't have that choice.I only got the sis900 onboard. But that works like a charm - no problems at all.I did have problems after I recompiled my kernel.I solved that by compiling everything that has to do with net connections - not the drivers of course - as module and kept the sis driver always compiled into the kernel - not as a module.I might check out one day what I really need in there but right now I am not recource strapped.
