hi ,
I am connected to a network managed by college admin.
I am able to ping gateway and dns server (8.8.8.8) .
Yesterday all worked well .
Now I cannot browse any website.
nslookup websiteURL
gives me proper ip addresses .
I ran firefox in safe mode . Still 'connection has timed out' .

How can I debug this ?
You contact your 'college admin', and tell them you're having network problems. Since you provide NO useful details at all, despite having been here for EIGHT YEARS now, what do you think we'll be able to tell you? You don't tell us anything about your network configuration, version/distro of Linux, etc.
If things worked yesterday, and don't today, then the obvious thing to ask is, "What changed?" Did the machine update? Did you change anything? Try a different web browser? Restart the machine? What have you done/tried???
i am using ubuntu 10.04 based distro booted via USB stick .
I meant to ask - is it possible for network admin to block website browsing but allow dns resolution ?

First, that is a VERY old distro, and why are you running it off USB, rather than having it installed???

After eight years asking about networks/internet/Linux, as well as having the resources of the Internet available to you, you should know the answer is "yes".

Speak to the network administrators about this problem. To be honest, it sounds as if you're doing something incorrect, illegal, or immoral; otherwise you would not be trying to circumvent their network.

So you're live booting a very old OS. Once again, this sounds suspicious of someone breaking the rules for their own means. They can block anything they want, and it would seem that they've blocked you because they've detected you using their network incorrectly.

Agree on all points totally. I thought the same thing with the booting-from-usb, right off the bat.

Yes its possible, and if you're doing something nasty they will know as well. Remember "Admin own the network", play nice and safe.
