Internet connection sharing / ssh stopped it
 

I recently got Internet connection sharing going on my 2 'puter lan.
I have been wanting to get tcp or something going so as to be able to transfer files.
I got ssh going again as a precursor to tcp. I had read that was needed.
After getting my 2 'puters connected with ssh my internet connection sharing quit working.

Where should I look to find the cause of this?

Not sure how your internet is configured but probably via broadband. To file share you need NFS (Network File Share) which is inherently insecure. Linux is very specific about NFS and the precise directories are specified under NFS (so in that sense it is fairly secure) but to make sure your system is secure you then need to firewall and include ipmasq (masquerading ) to share connections.

SSH - transfre files
 

you need to tell us where you want to transfer the files from and to...ssh on internal home nets is overkill. From the internet you would be mad not to do it by SSH.

Note that SSH requires TCP.

Yes, let me start over.
I have 2computers on direct ethernet cable, no hubs or what have you. I dont currently want to transfer file over the internet, but might want to in the future.

At the beginning of setting up a lan I was told a good first step was getting communications between a shell on each box.

Ssh was recommended as a good option because if in the future I wanted to network over the internet It would be good.

I got ssh working for the above reason. I had been having fun with it, with what little I could do so far.

I decided to get Internet connection sharing going. It was working fine.

NOTE:
I miss spoke in my previous post, it was scp I was trying to get going, I think I was just experimenting my way thruogh any and all tools I could, to try to be able to copy files between two 'puters on my home lan.

I fired up ssh to make sure shell communications was still good and because I read ssh was involved in scp.
That stopped my internet connection sharing from working.
I can reconfigure my internet connection sharing and it starts working again. but ssh stops working.


Bottom Lines:

Nfs was and is still eluding me. I looked at TigerOC's link and I still think NFS is above my current understanding/skill level, unless I can find some "NFS for Dummies" type info.

I am going to keep learning command line stuff and have actually had some small success', but I am anxious to be able to transfer files.

I don't care how I transfer files.

At this point might it behoove me to put all effort into NFS or is there a easier to get going alternative for file transfer?

If I should be concentrating on NFS, I wont worry about the subject of my original post for now. My 1st goal is file transfer.

Any Ideas on witch way to proceed from here would be greatly appreciated.

Toastermaker follow the steps in the link I gave you very precisely. You would probably be advised to to go for static addressing initially, as opposed to dhcp. I have the same setup with a cat5 cross-over cable. It took me about a day to get this working and to fully understand the process. Try and figure out with each step how this works because it will stand you in good stead for future networking.

I will concentrate on NFS. I know its the way but was hopeing for a quick fix. I hope I'm not getting lazy.
