Angry internet connection procedure in fedora 6 (dhcp)


hi !! i hav installed 64 bit fedora 6. i m unable to get connected to the internet . i use DHCP. IT DISPLAYS ONLY STATICALLY ASSIGN IP . can anyone tell me the procedure to get connected . when i give the ip in the addr bar it says IE 5 and above supported. wat should i do?????

If you are getting a "Only IE 5 and above" message then you are connecting to something. What kind of network are you on, corporate, school, home? The command to get a DHCP Ip address is

dhclient <the name of your ethernet card>

but it sounds like you have one and your network is just stubborn about browsers.

i hv to run onlineclient.exe for logging in.

I see. The .exe extension of onlineclient.exe implies that this is a Windows executable. Are you running this with WINE?

i m unable to run it. i just typed the ip in the addr bar. i heard some network configuration has to be set,. cn u giv me the procedure.? something like PPP application has to be run .will that help me?

PPP is specific to dialup internet. Are you using dialup? Whose IP address are you typing?

the person gave me an address 172.16.0.1 and when i type it in the browser i get access to the service providers website some akshbroadband.login.jsp .i replace login with client and get access to the web. i cheked n/w config in windows . it says assign automatically by dhcp.

I see. Have you tried typing other websites in, it sounds to me like you already have internet access, unless your ISP forces you to login via their webpage.
