Internet connection not working on Mandarake 10
I have just installed Mandrake 10 to my laptop and now seem unable to get an internet connecion. I've been through the Internet Conection setup program, entered the correct host name, Ip Address, Gateway, Subnet and 1s6t and 2nd DNS but when I try to browse a site it takes ages looking then returns
"an error occured while loading "URL" Unknown host "URL"" Except with the address of the website I'm trying to find in place of where I written "URL" That message comes up every time, the only thing that changes is the website name It's an ADSL connection that I'm wired into through a hub. There IS a Windows network in the office, but I am not connnected to that, and nothing on the network is connected to the internet, we just run it through the hub as a method of sharing it across 5/6 users. What o I ned to do in order to get htis connection working on Linux? I REALLY hate Windows (well, Microsoft) PLEASE don't make me go back!! |
I use Debian and the method is slightly different. The basics are that you should regard the ADSL router as an interface and point your ethernet towards that interface. The router will itself pickup off the internet. You can either use static addressing and get the router address from the admin and set it up or use dhcp to address the router.
My router has a predefined interface with the internet as specified by the ISP but on the network side the address is 10.0.0.10 subnet 255.0.0.0 and I just point my eth1 at 10.0.0.10. Hope this helps. |
