internet connection kind of slow, occasionally times out or locks up

I've been on Suse for about 6 months or so. I don't think it was this slow at first, even though it was never as fast as Windows. I've been checking out the memory usage and right now it says that out of 256 MB, 5 MB are free. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? What I can't figure out is why Linux, with all of its simplicity and stream-linedness, takes up so much more RAM than big, bad Windows. Any thoughts on how to improve performance without an upgrade?

What desktop environment or window manager (if any) are you using? Gnome + Redhat 9 ran fairly well on my PC that had 128 MB of RAM. But java killed the remaining memory. KDE uses more resources than gnome, but there a plenty of minimalist desktops that are smaller than either one.

I am using KDE. It says that I have 80 processes running. I'll try Gnome and see what happens, though I use some of the things from KDE, occasionally. I was wondering if there was a way to permanently close some of these processes that I might not need, if I only knew what they were.

Gnome is slightly better but not much. The older version of it that came with RH9 worked ok. There are others such as fluxbox or blackbox or xcfe (I think those are the names.) You can search for those on google since I don't any URLs for their main webpages.
