internet connection is slow
My internet connection is painfully slow. On my windows partition the connection is fine but under linux it is slower than dial-up. I'm not sure what information I need to give for your help other than that it is a DSL connection.

Hi,

You can get the dmesg output at the command line interface (cli); Code:
~#dmesg |most # this will allow you to move through the dmesg, post the relevant output. |
distribution: Mandrake 10.1
kernel: #1 SMP Fri Oct 1 11:24:45 CEST 2004 (not sure if this is what your looking for but its the output of "uname -v") ethernet card: NetXtreme BCM5751 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express modem: Netopia Cayman 3341 I'm not sure what I am looking for but all I see in dmesg is: IP: routing cache hash table of 4096 buckets, 32Kbytes TCP: Hash tables configured (established 32768 bind 32768) The output of lspci -vv: Code:

Hi,
You should place any long listings within vbcode tags either with the code (#) or quote. These are at the top of the reply window. The code(#) would make data easier to scroll through. I would first update your '/usr/share/pci.ids' file to rid the system of the 'unknown devices'. When you perform a ping, what are the response times? Post the output of 'ifconfig -a' from the cli after you perform some 'ping google.com'. |
I'm not exactly sure what that means. I did try to ping google.com and I get a infinately repeating line to the extent of:
64 bytes from py-in-f99.google.com (64.233.167.99): icmp_seq=1 ttl=243 time=54.3 ms The command ifconfig -a gives me a command not found error. Maybe its worth mentioning that I'm using bash. |

Might help if we knew some of your system specs, like CPU type, RAM, video card, etc.
Are you using KDE, which is default for Mandrake 10.1, or something else like Gnome. When you do command 'top', what's the memory usage? Are there any processes using alot of CPU? Cause from the little bit of information you've posted, perhaps it's not connection speed. |
Also; it help mentioning what distro you are using...
I looks like you are using IPV6 (which slows down you Internet connection) Search for TCP/IP tuning on Linux (specifically your distro), and disabling IPV6. Also you may want to search for how to disable IPV6 on Firefox www.google.com/linux |
CPU: Pentium 4, 3.20GHz
video card: ATI Radeon RV370 I'm not sure about RAM. I am using KDE. output of 'top' Code:
top - 15:57:20 up 17:03, 3 users, load average: 0.08, 0.06, 0.02 |
I don't see anything in the top output to suggest problem with memory or cpu usage.
I would follow custangro's suggestion and disable IP6. |
