Internet Connection

HI,

I have just installed Mandriva 9.2 on an old PC which has a USB port and an Ethernet port. I want to setup Internet sharing with another PC running XP. What kind of router do I need for the Linux box?

I want the Linux box to become the network server so the XP PC will get to the Internet through it.

Thanks
David

You don't necessarily need a router for that purpose. A simple hub (normally cheaper) would suffice. That and a couple of cables and you are all set.

Your options David are a hub, router, wifi access point, bluetooth, or peer to peer cable. You're not building a big company network so like Pcghost said stay away from routers/switches. A hub or better yet wifi/bluetooth is scalable if u want to add more pc's/laptops later but otherwise why add clutter? You can hook them up directly. Put a NIC card in each machine and run a net cable right between them, the newer ones dont need a central hub. I assume it's a piece of cake to then configure in Mandriva. Just post back in the Linux-Networking forum for help.

These days thanks to the chinese you can even find an affordable USB-to-USB networking cable without a need for opening up the pcs (they have micro-NICs between them) but you need to test their compatibility with ur distro.

hey there, connect ur pc's directly with a cat 5 cable and setup the ip's.after that use configure the internet connection in the mandriva. specify ur proxy server (which is the mandriva) in the xp box. thats all. u dont need a router or like that only a hub if u add machines later ...... vimal

Internet Connection

Thanks for all your help. I ended up buying an ADSL router from Ebay, connected my network up and everything works fine. Now I plan to turn my Linux box into a file server and Internet proxy server.
