internet and apt-get install not working
Hello,
I am using ubuntu 9.1 on evaluation board and my internet is not working. Also i need to install softwares and apt-get install is also not working. Under /etc/apt/apt.conf....i have configured as below.. Acquire::http::proxy "http://username:passwd@proxyserver:8080/"; Acquire::ftp::proxy "ftp://username:passwd@proxyserver:8080/"; Acquire::https::proxy "https://username:passwd@proxyserver:8080/"; If I do ifconfig...inet address was not configured and I forcefully configured it using sudo ifconfig eth2 10.246.80.15 up Kindly help. about computers you never use force, you shouldn't have forcefully configured the internet, however, if you did so and its still not working, then most probably you configured it wrongly, i prefer you undo all that, and by the way are you using wireless or wired connection? clarify

Sorry, I don't know about your internet problem, but I know that Ubuntu 9.10 is unsupported. Therefore you can not install software on it from the repositories. Upgrade to a newer version.

if you are using a wired connection, ubuntu and 9.10 especially never needs any changes after the cable is plugged into the ethernet port, it automatically gets connected to the Internet, had you tried that earlier? and seen that it didn't connect or you just started to put configurations? if you hadn't please delete the settings you had put and restart the pc, try connecting to the Internet after plugging in the cable.
about the apt-get error its because update is not able to run due to a failed internet connection. pls connect the pc to the Internet first. Before reading on, try running the apt-get update command first on a working internet connection and see if it will download the updates, it fails, then lets go on.....Considering that ubuntu 9.10 is no longer supported you'll have to edit the sources.list file in order to direct the server to where it should get the updates from, before you run the apt-get install command, you have to update. so to edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file on the command line run Quote:
