Internet access - to be or not to be...

I have Mandrake 9.2 install - all hardware devices running fine.

I've managed to get my NIC installed and it's connected. I have the correct IP address, gateway, dns, etc...(according to the config your Internet/Network applet/wizard)

However, I'll open a browser and type in anything...google.com or yahoo.com - whatever. Browser says it found the website..connected and waiting for reply...and it just sits there all day doing nothing.

Is my internet connection set up wrong in Linux? I doubt google or yahoo website is down. I'm stumped.

My mode of connection is cable modem (and I use a router). "showstat" showed my modem is connected and up and running. I couldn't get the output of ifconfig -a since I'm replying to you here using my windows computer (and my linux isn't on the net yet). However, it showed all the proper IP address, showed my ethernet card interface was up and running. I wasn't able to ping "yahoo.com," but I was able to ping them directly to their IP address - so..........I think I'm looking at a DNS problem.

However again, when I open the browser and typed in "www.yahoo.com" - nothing. When I just put their IP address in...still nothing. That confuses me (I can ping their ip, but can't connect via a browser..hmmm).

Any other suggestions? I should tell you too...I know very little of the command line stuff. I just learned today what "ifconfig -a" does...

try editing the file /etc/ppp/resolv.conf
making it read the following

search
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (dns1)
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (dns2)
and save

see how that goes and if that doesnt help then we can try something else :-)

Nada. I'm using the DNS address of: 204.127.199.8 (provided to me from my ISP). I looked in the resolv.conf file and it was listed there already, but still no connection to the outside world....
