internet access in linux

How do you access the internet using FireFox in linux
Some more details.
I'm starting an online class Tuesday on Linux. The textbook I bought included a copy of Fedora 13 so I took an old laptop I had and installed Linux after I reformatted the hard drive. I have a Windows 2003 network in my office with DSL through a router. I simpley plugged the network cable into an unused outlet and couldn't access the Internet trough the laptop. I've used this connection on numerous other Windows computers with no problems. (i.e. plug and go).

What am I doing wrong?

What exactly do you mean? Firefox is a web browser, like any other. You enter the URL you want to visit in the address bar, as you would in another browser.

I suspect that what you want to know is not how to "access the Internet using Firefox", as you put it, but something else. Are you having problems connecting to the Internet (or your router, for example). If so, you're going to need to tell us which distribution you use, how you connect to the Internet (or your network: wireless? Wired?) and the hardware you're using. That's probably not an exhaustive list, but it's a start.

Try opening a terminal and

ping google.com

If you get a response, your connected to the Internet. Usually Linux connects to the network without any user intervention.

ive never used fedora, but you dont think the firewall is blocking access. another thing ive never used it dsl, but before i connect to my, mobile broadband dongle, i need to do a couple very simple configurations in network manager to access it. wouldn't b the same with dsl?

1) using fedora 13
Fedora 13 is past it's End Of Life there is and never will be any support for it
Fedora has a VERY fast development cycle , a new version EVERY 6 months and support for any given release for only 13 months.
-- there IS NO new software and NO security updates -- no nothing for fedora 13.

Fedora 15 is the current and 16 will be out in about 2 months

I took an old laptop
how old fedora requires a lot of system resources
see the fedora documentation
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/index.html
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US...dware_Overview

for dsl PPPoE in fedora use the gui tools
Gnome is different than KDE
Gnome2 ,the Gnome3 in fedora1 still needs a "userGuide"
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US..._Internet.html

KDE
some googling
