For me to get on the internet i have to install a file so my pctel winmodem will werk. I can only install that file if i upgrade to kernel 2.4. for me to upgrade to 2.4 i have to install gcc 2.96.3. when i try to install it i type rpm -fvh gcc-2.96-94.i386.rpm. then it says the it cant install it cuz it only supports versions <= 3. so i donwloaded version 3 and it says the same thing. What do i do

What version of gcc you using at the moment? I don't think I've ever compiled a kernel with the 'recommended' version of gcc. If you can't get an rpm to work you can always get the source down and build it from scratch (assuming you currently have some other version of gcc), its pretty easy - just takes a while.

The error your getting is related to your version of RPM, not the version of gcc you're installing.. You'll need to update it (rpm).

Yeah, I must admit that you can sometimes get a snowball rolling downhill effect when you want to upgrade something. But dependencies are crucial for having everything work. The price of stability.

Do you have to have red hat to use rpm's? I read the howto at rpm.org and the only distrobution they mention is red hat. I downloaded the newest vesion of rpm they had and i am going to go install it now maybe i will write down the error message this time if there is one. hope this works or i am going to have to ask my friend for his red hat cd's.

I tried installing the newest rpm but it gave me the same error message. I have rpm version 3.0.0.ol i think. Also most of the time windows does not boot it just get to the screen thats says windows me and it just stays there:smash:

Red Hat created RPM (or the Red hat Package Manager), but several distros use RPM as their package management system. So the answer is, you don't have to have Red Hat to get RPM or use it.

What distro are you using and what version?

From your personal info, I gather you're using Caldera 2.4. Have you tried looking for an update directly from them?
