Internet

Hii,

I am using RedHat Linux9.0

I wanted to know that what is the easiest way to connect to the internet because while using kppp I am facing a lot of problems for e.g. whenever I try to connect to the internet through kppp, while starting pppd my computer hangs and all the three LED's on the keyboard(Capslock etc) start blinking and then I had to restart the computer so please help me solve this problem.

I would also like to know what is it necessary to activate pppd before trying to connect through kppp?:newbie:

Please give details of the hardware you are using. eg internal pci modem or external serial modem. Have you tested whether kppp or ppp is actually seeing the modem.

Got to have a hardware modem or drivers for a winmodem. Not all winmodems are supported. You might give wvdial a try.

I am using an internal pci modem and my modem is supported by linux and I've twice connected to the internet through my linux but out of 10 tries i am successful just once on average . most of the times my computer hangs as i have given details in my initial post and sometimes it also gives no dialtone error, however my phone line was connected and the dial tone was available so please help me in solving this problem .

Thanks for replying:newbie:

To be quite honest winmodems are very unsatisfactory with Linux drivers. To save yourself a lot of frustration (which you are already experiencing) get yourself an external serial modem. They are very cheap and you will find it works perfectly.

Is there any alternative solution apart from changing my modem and also tell me what is pppd

still desperately waiting for a reply:(

If you want to persevere with your current modem then you'll need to do some reading of the documentation relating to the driver being used and see if others are experiencing problems similar to yours and how they solved them.
pppd is literally point to point protocol daemon i.e. the software that controls serial communication devices. Herein lies the rub - you are using a pci device as a serial device.
