Red face Intel 945 Display Problems - XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X

I have an HP laptop dv6000t dual core 64 bit processor. Loaded Mandriva 2007 (4CD edition) few days back. I got it installed but I am having issues loading the GUI on Mandriva 2007.

I did a bit of searching around this forum and found quite a few similar issues and attempted to fix my issue referencing my search results. After the O/S is loaded I am prompted with a CLI, user login prompt. I su - in successfully.

I unable to startx or startkde. Typical message I get is

XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I attempted to mod my display settings through mcc as well as change the driver to "vesa" in my x11org.conf file, yet still does not work Again, my display adapter is an intel 945 chipset.

Any suggestions or am I screwed?

Just my luck my other workstation's mobo fried out on me last night so now I'm down to my backup box and one external hdd thank god for backup boxes...

Thanks All

It sounds to me like a config issue. When you run startx, there will be an error message above the lines you've posted here (Perhaps with (EE) next to it). If there is an error message there, post it here.

Also, did you "roll your own" /etc/X11/xorg.conf, or did you use a config utility? A good way to configure your box for X is to run "xorgconfig" (as root) and then tweak the config file that gets generated.

If that doesn't work, you can try "xorgcfg", although I've had more luck with xorgconfig and tweaking the result.

Once the config util creates a new configuration file, give it a path to save it to other than the default (so you don't overwrite your existing config). Then run "X -config /path/to/new/xorg.conf" and post whatever error messages it gives you here.
