Insufficient permissions to kill process
 

I'm trying to kill the process: parallel:/dev/lp0, but it says I don't have permission. How can I get permission? I really need to kill this process cause it's my printer and it just keeps printing even if I stop it with the Printing Manager. Thanks.

Did you change to root? Type su and then enter the root password. From there you should be able to list the processes with ps aux. Then just kill the job number.

Thanks pljvaldez. I killed the process but the printer just keeps printing no matter what. It's no longer listed in ps aux and not listed in the printing manager in kde, but it just keeps printing?

Does it have it's own kill button on it? Some printers have a memory chip that can store several jobs and print even after you've killed the job on the machine. Sometimes I like to just pull out all the paper and let the printer upchuck. Then sometimes it asks you if you want to resume printing or cancel the job...

No I haven't found a kill button on it yet. It's an old Deskjet 690c, with a on/off and a paper/error button and not much more. I cut the power from the printer to see if I could erase the memory, but it started up again when I plugged it back in. So I just don't know how to make it stop.

Another related question: I'm thinking of buying a new printer and I was wondering if the HP aserjets are good with Linux on an old computer? I have two usb 1.1 and parallel, can I use any new laserprinter? I have a p111 700mhz. Does anyone have any tips for buying a laserprinter I can use with Linux?

Most laserprinters are supported, but going for the HPLaserJet compatible option should make them work if you don't have the exact driver.
