installing VLC on mandrake 10.2

i'm trying to install vlc because i've been having problems with totem recently so i downloaded the file vlc-0.8.2.tar.gz and i uncompress it and than i do ./configure and on the faqs it says to complie and install by doing
Code:
% make
% su
Password: [Root Password]
# make install
but when i enter 'make' i get
Quote:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
what i dont understand is that inside the directory created from uncompressing there are two makefiles, Makefile.am and Makefile.in I dont understand what i'm doing wrong any suggestions

Do you need to run "./configure" first?

./configure probably errored out, due to missing dependencies which means the Makefiles were not created. I'd suggest finding rpm's for vlc and it's dependencies ( it has alot ), compiling it on Mandrake is gonna take awhile.
