Installing VLC Media Player on Yellow DOg 6.1

Hi there,

I have been battling to install VLC on Yellow Dog 6.1. I have gone through all the documentation I can understand and have done the "./configure" thing and got this error:

configure: error: in `/home/Dunstan/src/vlc-0.9.9a':
configure: error: Could not find libavcodec or libavutil. Use --disable-avcodec to ignore this error.

So I tried the "./configure" again, but with the disable bit, so it looked like this:

./configure --disable-avcodec

Then, I got another error:

configure: error: in `/home/Dunstan/src/vlc-0.9.9a':
configure: error: Could not find libavformat or libavutil. Use --disable-avformat to ignore this error.

So I did the "./configure" thing a third time, only like this:

./configure --disable-avcodec --disable-avformat

Then, I got this error:

configure: WARNING: Could not find libswscale. Trying to enable imgresample.
checking for IMGRESAMPLE... no
configure: WARNING: Could not find libavcodec.
checking for POSTPROC... no
configure: error: Could not find libpostproc.

And I am now completely perplexed. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Any help would be great!

Hi Dunstan,
You don't have the development packages necessary to do the compilation. The source code requires that certain libraries be present on your system, and they are not present. That's why you're getiing all these messages. Each time you get a message of the type: "Could not find lib..." you need to find out which package contains the lib referred to in the error messages (typically a development or dev package) and install it.
