installing ubuntu on lenovo thinkpad laptop...won't boot from cd drive

Hi

I've just joined the linux gang(or I am trying to)
I have
-downloaded desktop/netbook edtion
-burned to dvd using infrarecord
-changed bios settings to boot from cd
-didn't work
-used the override feature that gives a bootlist at splash screen but cd drive not listed so I assume the cd is not recognised as a boot disk
-tried the usb/cd maker that comes with in the rar but its looking for the cd image...an .iso file, but I can't find one in folder.

ubuntu says I can run a trial from the cd alongside vista but when I open the executable it just offers intall, no try and if selected starts to install

I think I can do the partition thing if I have to but I don't want any vista running on my machine.

any ideas?

thanks

c

That's the LiveCD function : boot from CD. Your CD-drive should be recognized by the BIOS as a bootable device. ie should appear whether it contains a bootable disc or not. Did you burn the iso (burn image function of any respectable CD burning program) or just put the .iso file on the CD? you have to burn the iso. the .iso (what you downloaded) is what the Liveusb creator is looking for.

hey, thanks for the reply.
I used a program to burn the whole ubuntu folder onto a cd (infrarecord)
I have a folder called isolinux but I have no file with a .iso extension
its highly possible I am doing something stupid as not quite sure what I am looking for
should there have been a .iso file with the ubuntu 10 download?
thanks

i found a file called

Bootable_NoEmulation.img

can that be used as the cd image?

The key word is image...

You have to burn the downloaded file as an ISO image file. How to do this is not always obvious in all burner programs. You might try this, it will present the right procedure right before your eyes.

After that, you can use a keystroke for a one-time-boot or open the system BIOS and change the boot order. Look at the system documentation on how to do both if you have trouble.

cheers...i'll give it a lash and post how I do

It can be done from infrarecorder, but I believe it must be done from the actions menu to burn the image, instead of just creating a data disc with the .iso on the disc.

I don't have a windows box near me to verify, but I do use infrarecorder pretty much exclusively when I'm forced to use Windows.
