Installing Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop - Freezes during installation

Good morning,

I am new to this forum, but extremely frustrated. I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on my 1 year old Toshiba laptop with 4GB RAM, both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Ubuntu on CD and on USB drive (used linuxliveusb and unetbootin to make ISO live). In all attempts, I get through most of the installation, take my avatar picture, choose time, detect keyboard, etc etc, but than install freezes while loading USB modules.

I have searched multiple forums and have seen that passing the boot parameter, 'nousb', may solve the problem and another forum mentioned that downloading the newest version, 13.XX may be the fix.

Please detail a fix to this problem, as I would like to get away from Windows and have taken waaaay too many avatar pics!!! Thank you, Tim

Have you verified the "checksum" of your image? If there was a download/burn error, that would explain why it always freezes at the same place:

Ubuntu is known to be quite buggy on certain hardware, you could try a couple of other distros from this list: http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

"Distro hopping" (trying several distributions to see which you like best for your user needs and which runs best on your hardware) is a rite of passage around here. ;)

Thanks for your prompt reply. I did use the Ubuntu installer check disk option. I believe it came out fine. I read quite a few posts that mentioned that users have problems with Toshiba laptops and installing Ubuntu. I plan to try the 'nousb' boot parameter, but was hoping for a definite fix. I will try another distribution, as you have mentioned. I did try the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of 12.04, as mentioned, but did not try a different version. Again, I read where another user had problems installing 12.04 at the usb driver load and he said that after installing the newest BETA version of Ubuntu, it had the correct usb configurations and it installed seamlessly.

Any other inputs would be appreciated. When I leave work today, I will try all suggestions I receive and post an update. Thank you.

Also keep in mind that 12.04 stands for "April 2012" so if your laptop is newer than that date, 12.04 might not have the correct drivers/hardware support.

Awe... Makes perfect sense! I bought the laptop around Spring-summer 2012. I did read that, as well, that unforunately, the computer manufacturers don't release their upcoming design specifications to the linux community. I will try the 'nousb' parameter (if I can figure out how to), while I am downloading the 2013 Ubuntu distrobution!!!

Thanks, I'll post my progress.

I had a similiar OS keep failing when trying to install. What I did is pressed Ctrl + Alt + F2 or F3 or 4 or something. This brought me to a log, and I would watch the log to see exactly what it's failing on. I then was able to remove a piece of hardware, reboot, and do the entire install. Maybe there is a piece of hardware it's trying to support and fails (ie, any usb stick plugged in or other USB stuff), or maybe it's actually a different module it is failing on, but the installer is saying USB.
