Installing to custom locations

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if it is possible to specify where a program gets installed to, whether it be using an RPM or installing from source. I like to know where everything goes, and I like to keep everything pretty organized.

I've tried searching around this site and google, but I can't seem to find what I"m looking for. All I can find is regular How-Tos that say basically "./configure, make, make install and watch it go."

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Well, with RPMs everything goes where the maintainer puts it,
you can easily find that out
rpm -q
(man rpm for details) is the key to your knowledge.

With source you can commonly use directives like
--prefix to tell stuff where to go, if you do a ./configure --help
it will tell you how to break that down very granularly.

Cheers,
Tink
