What software are you wanting to install? The easiest way will be for you to head to the Package Management section from the System menu (I think, been a while since I used Ubuntu) and search for the software you want. This way, the system installs + configures the software auotmatically for you. Using the sources management, you can add new locations to download packages from across the Internet rather than just your CD's. If you are trying to install directly from source, there should be a README or INSTALL file included in the downloaded package giving you the basic instructions for compiling the software,

thank you for your replay but it might as well be in chineese, what i want to be able to do is install limewire ( for example ) download software then install it, hope this clears things up thanks again

If you still need to install LimeWire, the instructions are very easy to follow:

Quote:

Linux - Open a shell and cd (change directory) to the directory where you downloaded the installer. At the prompt type: sh ./LimeWireLinux.bin
What don't you understand? Also, you need to have a JRE (Java Runtime Environment) installed to use LimeWire.

As for other software, maybe have a look at this. If the software you want to install isn't available through Synaptic, I guess you'd have to get the source and build it for your system (as fouldsy mentioned). I don't use Ubuntu, so I don't know the ins and outs of Synaptic..

I'd suggest reading through of the some very good tutorials on this website to get an understanding of the basics of Linux and the excellent documentation on the Ubtuntu website before trying to jump into running Limewire without being able to understand the quite straightforward installation notes.
