installing rpm in suse 10.0

please help with installing rpm in suse 10.0 secondly i wanted to ask what does i586.rpm or i386.rpm specify and how can i find out which one is compatible with my distro or which one do i need to download to work properly.

sarfraz:~/Desktop/dbus 1-1 # rpm -Uvh dbus-1-1.0.0-9.src.rpm
1:dbus-1 ########################################### [100%]

this is what happened. i thought it said 100% means complete but it didnt install at all i guess cuz the installation for which i needed it i ran that again it didn't help.

sarfraz:~/Desktop # rpm -Uvh libdbus-1-devel-1.1.2-2pclos2007.i586.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
dbus = 1.1.2 is needed by libdbus-1-devel-1.1.2-2pclos2007.i586
libdbus-1_3 = 1.1.2 is needed by libdbus-1-devel-1.1.2-2pclos2007.i586

now what do i do with this?

please help i am stuck with a simple installation for over a week now.

You have to install libdbus-1-devel-1.1.2-2pclos2007.i586 first.

How about installing (or updating) packages with Yeast2
instead ?? >> Menu > System > Yeast2. Then the correct
packages would probably be downloaded and installed.
Or have a look at your install DVD :
dbus-1-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
dbus-1-devel-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
dbus-1-glib-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
dbus-1-gtk-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
dbus-1-mono-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
dbus-1-python-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
dbus-1-qt3-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
dbus-1-qt3-devel-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
dbus-1-x11-0.60-33.2.i586.rpm
... or something like that.

The package dbus-1-1.0.0-9.src.rpm you "installed" is
source code, unpacked to /usr/src/packages/SOURCES .
( the suffix is .src.rpm not .rpm )

Please tell the reason to install a newer "dbus"

Why not install OpenSuSE 11, which is supported, and kill two birds with one stone? Get VLC working easily, and get back to a supported OS.
