installing .rpm files

hi all, i'm a newbie...
can someone explain me a little about rpm files...
what are they suppoz to do???
how do we install??
of course..
rpm -ivh filename.rpm (ithink)
but wot next after it has already been unpacked/installed..

Please help.. i'm getting confuse wiz all that stuffs...

the rpm command you gfave is correct, there is nothing after that, the software will be installed, assumign there is no error messages. just run the program in accordance to it's standard user documentation.
