Installing RH9 onto WinXP using PQMagic

Hi! Thanx for checking out my thread!

I tried to install RH9 onto my XP machine.

First I used Partition Magic to make a partition on my HDD.

Then I rebooted with RH9 CD1 to install.

I used the RH9 boot loader to choose between XP and RH. (After thought there... forgot how I was going to get back to XP after setting new partition active)

Now Linux starts okay, but I can't start XP. When I choose the XP partition on GRUB, I get the WinXP logo, then it reports "autochk cannot be found" and proceeds to reboot.

Has anyone had similar experiences? How do I get WinXP to work again?

Actually right now I am having this same exact problem...
I have found answers on this forum, but since I am such a sick newbie, I have not got it working yet. The answer I assume lies in Partition Magics rescue disks. unfortunately(sp?) i did not make those. I hope you did. If you did you should try setting the XP partition to active. Good Luck

well I think i know what the problem is ... partition magic.. when it made your partitions .. it has a habit of making the windows partition hidden... you need to change the status of the partition to none..
The best way to probably do this is in ms-dos with a boot up disk... unfortunately I dont have one and am experiencing the same problems.. I can only get Red Hat to run and dont know how to edit the partition from linux...

Anyway .. hope it helps...

If you want to get back into your windows partition, you can use your WinXP cd as a recovery console, and if you can figure out how to get to a repair console you can type

"fixmbr" or if that doesn't work "fdisk /mbr". However this will prevent you from getting back into your linux.

CtPoem: if you want a boot disk www.bootdisk.com has all the boot disks you could need, so you may want to try one from there.

Partition Magic usually comes with Boot Magic. Having just Windows installed, use PM to set up your partitions for Linux, then start Boot Magic and follow instructions to install new OS (Linux).
Have been using PM and BM for quite a while and never had a problem installing Linux on a computer already having one or two versions of Windows on it.

*update* Forget what I said, RH9 fuxored up something. Deleted RH9, shut off BootMagic, deleted partition with PMagic, then installed RH9 using LILO for bootloader.
Took a start-up and shut-down in safe mode, but WinME and RH9 running now.
