Question Installing Programs from Software Manager

I am currently running Mandrake 10.1 Community and have spent only several hours learning my way around it. Have spent hours on forums as well trying to learn how to install programs and such.

One of the things that is supposed to make my life easier is Software Manager, which, as far as i can tell, I can use to install the uncompressed tar.gz i downloaded (like the firefox browser installer for example).

My question is, where should i uncompress such programs so that they can be selectable in Software Manager? There is a very long list that appears there but I cannot make it navigate to the folder where I uncompressed the firefox installer.

What I have done instead is uncompress the firefox into a folder under my home (as root) and then used Menu under Configure System to create a shortcut to it under web browsers. That works, but I suppose there's a more logical (and correct!) way to do things.

Hope someone can show me the way.

Yes, you can compile from src and other files, however there are easier way's in Mandrake to install applications... The best being URPMI... You can learn how to set this up here:

http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

It's a little tricky if your new to Linux (I don't know why they have it setup like it is), but once you get the Software Sources installed the it's pretty simple to get most software without worrying about dependencies an other things...

you can also use RPMDrake which is kinda like URPMI but uses the Local sources like CD's etc... but the SW it usually comes up with is outdated that is why URPMI is much easier...

adding media as we speak ... will let you know of results when i get them. thanks very much for the help.

while i'm here, i've also looked at the HCL list for printers and noticed that the HP Laserjet 1010 (which I have here running on a print server on my otherwise windows network) is not present on the list. Have been trying to set it up on this machine to no avail. I suppose it's not possible?

So the printer is connected to another machine (presumably Windows) somewhere on the network? If that's the case, then linux couldn't really care less what kind of printer it is, install Samba and find some tutorials (I've never done it to explain) that teach you how to setup a network printer.

ok, download of media from sunsite uk mirror done.

i've noticed 3 new items added to software media manager: jpackage, contrib and main.

running commands to install firefox. updating cd2. looks good so far.

after this will try installing samba to get networked printer running.

thanks very much for the help.
