Installing printer on fedora 7
This is the first time our office is using fedora 7. We have purchased EPSON T10 printer assuming that any printer product is compatible with it. However, the accompanying CD driver of the printer is compatible only with Windows. We are now in dilemma on how to install the said printer.

Have you tried the printer yet ? Most printers are automatically installed by linux distros, so there's (most probably) no need of drivers Make sure whether the printer is detected and working properly, do print a test page |
Support for Fedora7 was dropped a couple of years ago. Support for any one version of Fedora is only for 13 months. Currently F10 and F11 are the only supported versions. Support for F10 will be dropped one month after F12 is released(in October?). When a version is no longer supported it means that there will be no further updates for that version of any kind. If this machine is exposed to the internet not having security updates available makes it a prime target for attack. It is also far more likely that your printer will be better supported in one of these newer versions.
If you do not want to be doing a fresh install of the OS every year (basically a requirement for running Fedora) you may want to consider switching to Centos. Centos is RHEL(RedHat Enterprise Linux) with the logos removed. It is free to download/update for free(unlike RHEL) and is binary compatible with RHEL. Centos 5.X will have support until at least 2014. Fedora is basically the development version of RHEL. After a package has been thoroughly debugged by running on Fedora only then is it introduced to Centos/RHEL. This debugging process is what makes Centos/RHEL an "enterprise" level distro. The hardware requirements are the same for Centos/RHEL as they are for Fedora. |
Help on Fedora 7
Thank you j jerry and lazlow. I have tried to print so many times but "no document queued" popped out. Its daunting to know that fedora must be updated oftentimes and that support for any one version lasts for only 13 months. My God! Am now thinking that our new computers with fedora will be useless. How could we possibly make it work?

first findout the printer is installed or not.
Connect printer, there'll be a printer option somewhere in the settings or use command dmesg and look for your printer (probably in the last lines) |
Most HP and Epson printers can be used with Linux.
EPSON T10 : Only may be ... http://www.openprinting.org/show_pri...son-Stylus_T10 Gutenprint drivers : gutenprint-foomatic-5.0.0.99.1-3.fc7.i386.rpm ..... |

installing printer on fedro7
Thank you j jerry, knudfl and chrism01. As suggested, I've checked if our computer detects EPSON T10 printer and it does. I've tried to print but just the same it does not work but the print status states "completed". Its frustrating!

What if you want is to easily get the printer working, i'd recommend you upgrade your fedora. fc7 is really old now, (current version being 11)
Ofcourse you can make your fc7 print but it'd be tough (you'll probably need to upgrade printing system and many more) |
You are using CUPS? yes?

installing printer on fedora 7
Am not using CUPS as I don't know how to go about it.

the software for fedora 7 is no longer around .So it WILL BE VERY HARD to get things working in a DEAD version of fedora
you might want to install Ubuntu it has a longer lifetime than fedora and is NOT SO cutting edge that things don't work -- example -- fedora has had a sound issue since fedora 8 . it works for some but not for others . |
Fedora 7
Thanks a lot for all your advices. Have to seek approval for upgrading of program. But, its a very sound advice. :hattip:
