Installing package texlive

I've installed Ubuntu 10.4.3

I'm trying to install the LaTeX program texlive. I've entered

Code:

sudo apt-get install texlive
and get the following output

Quote:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package texlive
Then I tried

Code:

latex
And got

Quote:

The program 'latex' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install texlive-latex-base
So I tried

Code:

sudo apt-get install texlive-latex-base
and got

Quote:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package texlive-latex-base

What's missing? Can anyone suggest a way forward?

Well, you could install from Synaptic, or check your repositories, or install the package directly (http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/tex/texlive)

However, I think if you do a manual install then it won't update automatically, so you should probably try the first two options :)

OK

But when I start Synaptic and search for texlive I only see the binaries which I think I downloaded by accident (I don't need those do I? I'm not expected to compile it?)

How do I make texlive appear?

If you downloaded binaries, then you don't need to compile them - you only need to compile source code. Which binaries exactly did you download before? And do they definitely not work (can you run 'latex' from the command line)?
