Installing Opera on Mandrake
 

Hi,

I have Mandrake 9.0 installed on a comp, I downloaded the Opera gzip file for that platform, it is in my docs. Now, how do I install this program in Mandrake.

Mandrake uses RPMs, you should download the RPM that is suitable for Mandrake 9.0 and simply click on the file in a file manager. Kpackage will open and you will need the root password to complete the installation.

You can use the file you have, but using RPMs on an RPM-based distro makes far more sense.

if you don't use the RPM distro, u can simply download the gzipped tarball (i assume yours is opera*****.tar.gz or opera*****.tgz or soemthing like that. it's a harder way to configure but hey, that's the dirty work that we enjoy :D

start a terminal session, go to the folder contained the file and type

gunzip filename.tar.gz

(replace the filename.tar.gz with the real file name

now you should have a file called filename.tar

now run:

tar -xvf filename.tar

now you sholud see it verboses a load of filenames and folders.

go and check the folder it created, and go into it

there should be an install script or install-bin. run it by typing:

./install

replace ./install with any of the script that they have

you should be done then,

the installation should prompt you for a folder to install opera - remember that - and run the "opera" executable in there to run opera.

I use the static rpm for opera on mandrake 9.1 and it works great. Opera is such an awesome web browser. Not sure how new you are but incase you are super new remember to type in "opera" in the terminal to bring up opera. Also you can put it in your programs menu. Take care.

PS to install the rpm I just put it on my desktop then open up the terminal, cd Desktop then type rpm -iv (complete opera filename)

I've had some problems with the static rpm, but the shared-QT rpm works great in my Mandrake 9.1 setups (A desktop and laptop).

Hiya and tks for these very helpful tips. I really like this browser and can't wait to get it installed.

I am new but I've gotten myself through a short Linux course so I have some of the basics.

In terms of a preferred textbook on Linux, any suggestions? I really feel I need to get my hands on one of these.

tcaptain, which QT shared version are you using? Are you using the mandrake 9.0 version or "others"? I've been having problems with the static version as well. Opera suddenly just vanishes at what seems to be random occurances. Thank you for your time.

I have Mandrake 9, however, I have not yet actually installed Opera, I have been tied up like mad and have not been on my machine for a while. When I get that tested I'll get back in touch
