installing only some of the files from a package?

Hi all,

OS: Debian testing

Is it possible to instruct apt-get to install only some of the files in a package?.

Here is the specific problem I'm facing: I have installed latex using the latex installer from CTAN. Now I'd like to install lyx but when apt-get install lyx reports it will install all the deb latex packages (it seems to be unaware latex is already installed).

So my question is: can I instruct apt-get to install only the lyx files with the extra 300MB or so of latex?.

Most likely, lyx needs all of the latex packages for dependencies. If you don't install the dependencies, then lyx will not be able to function. Now that being said, have you previously installed latex using apt-get? I know you said you have installed it using CTAN, but I do not know what that is.

Thanks all for replying.

corp769: CTAN provide its own LaTex installer which seems to actually work much better than the deb package. It's only a single package to download (in constrast to the many packages in debian).

repo: I'll give that a try. thanks.
